Rare metals such as gold (Au), tantalum (Ta), tin (Sn), and tungsten (W), mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its surrounding countries and regions, have caused serious human rights and environmental issues, drawing international attention (the aforementioned rare metal minerals are referred to as "conflict minerals").
